The book "Creating the Full Service Homework Center in Your Library" by Cindy Mediavilla is a resource to look at. We have 2 Circ copies and 1 Ref (all at LITCEN).

This is information I received from Colleen Spahr, City of Westminster

We have a library-run Homework Center in our library's meeting room, which is connected to the children's room. Purpose: To provide a homework-friendly place, so students can complete their homework in a timely manner. To provide homework assistance, if needed, for students in elementary, middle school, and high school. To assist students to understand their homework assignments, so they can complete them on their own. We offer the Homework Center Monday-Thursday from 3:30-5:30 pm. I have high school student volunteers and adult volunteers. The students are usually from IB programs. I try to have one adult each session. I work for a city library and we have a volunteer coordinator who screens the volunteers. I don't think the high school students have a background check, but she does call their references. This is great! Hopefully we could go by their report cards and recommendations, preferably by teachers in the subject they would be trying to help in. What might be cool is to kill two birds with one stone and if the volunteer tutor "on duty" was not familiar with the topic that the student was assigned, the volunteer tutor could help walk the student through Live Homework Help! That is, if a computer was available in the community room, study room, or whatever part of the library the tutoring was happening in.
